sustainability of beekeeping
Posted by moersch51 on 2010/6/17 16:27:06 (16 reads)

Beekeeping in Alberta is a dying industry. There- I've said it! I've been wanting to say this for a long time. All I ever read about in this province is how to keep this multi-million dollar industry alive with mite treatments, artificial feeds, and migratory practices, which work against sustainability. Hasn't it become clear that these practices work against the honeybee rather than for it. Beekeepers put their futures into the hands of researchers and government regulatory bodies that have as their agenda the continuance of the cash flow, to the detriment of the species on which their salaries depend.
I'm tired of the studies. I'm tired of the short-sighted solutions. We can treat our bees like cattle, and make their survival totally dependent on the agri-pharmaceutical companies, or we can treat them as the strong and noble species that they are.
